Sunbathing. The art of baking in the sun, literally. The most important thing you can do for the health of your skin is to not lay out in the sun for any period of time without protection. Sun Protective Formula (SPF) is designed to provide a buffer between you and the sun's harmful rays. Before you go outside on any given day, you need to take with you three essential weapons against the sun:
- Sun glasses
- Lip protectant
- SPF skin care on your face and hands
And if you want to be bold and actually spend time out in the sun, you need a whole lot more.
- You can get sunburn through your bathing suit and clothes. So just because you have SPF on, it doesn't mean you can just lay out on a pool deck for hours. Set up a schedule and give yourself 80% shade time, 20% sun time.
- Time yourself in the sun. 20 minutes one side. 20 minutes on the other side. Do not make the mistake of falling asleep in the sun. Not only will you regret your sunburn, you will take years off the health of your skin. (Think baked potato left in the oven too long.)
- Wear a cover up. Sure you look fabulous in your bikini, who doesn't. But stop showing it off and hide your skin with a cover up.
- Wear a hat. Right now, they're in style, so you're in luck. But even it they weren't, hats protect hair, eyes, and face.
- Use and SPF lotion on your hands. Lots of time we forget this helpful hint. And you will notice it. By the end of summer , your cuticles will looked cracked from dehydration.
- Drink your water. A common theme throughout this site, but nonetheless important. Make sure you stay hydrated.
All of these helpful hints apply to someone in the summer, going to a pool, going to a beach, right? Not true. These principles apply anytime of year. In fact, winter can be brutal on skin. And, snow trips require the same protection as if you were laying out by a pool. White reflects heat and a snow bunny mountain trail is nothing but white.
So go and feel the warmth of the sun. Just be smart about it!
